Invite the Invisible

A collection of sculpture
by Addy Sechler

Prayerful, clerical, and contemplative faces adorn a collection of stoneware sculptures in this first series by ceramic artist Addy Sechler.

Gradually increasing in size and complexity, this series started with an interest in a new form- abstract figure. The rules became clear as soon as the head went on the first piece. Make a body full of expression, add shoulders, and put a head on top. Because this was my first time building big, I overshot the size of the kiln and a couple of my pieces gave me the opportunity to amend the rules and make something that surprised me. From there, it was much easier to take this framework and apply it to fit in unexpected ways.

One of the most surprising things to me was what came through while designing the pieces. What began with an exercise in form became seeking to create the illusion of contents pressing against a surface. The same way my skin contains my contents. The same also applies I thought, to my soul, constantly pressing against the cap, looking for methods of expression. In the sculptures, I can live beyond the surface.

Thank you for your patience while I continue working on more pieces and this page. I will send out announcements once the vision here is complete, but until then, thank you for taking the time to visit.

Yours,

Addy Sechler
